    Jamali Visit Crucial for Democracy

    Dear Readers:

Pakistan Prime Minister Jamali has been granted a White House meeting by President Bush and the move is causing recurring stomach aches in the Musharraf presidency. Every one understands that even a ‘hello-hi’ meeting between a political, elected head of government and the US Administration would dilute the authority of the Pakistan Army. Already General Musharraf is feeling the pressure not to dissolve the assemblies.

The Jamali move has been well planned and well timed. A Rose Garden joint news conference in which Mr. Bush supports and praises Mr. Jamali would send a strong message to Pakistan that the political government must be taken seriously. Hopefully Mr. Jamali would extract the right advantage from this opportunity of a lifetime. Can he assert himself after his White House summit, would be the key question. But whatever the outcome, which is to some extent predictable, Washington would have created an alternative to General Musharraf. It was overdue?

    Take care

    Shaheen Sehbai
