Second Phase of Pre-Poll Rigging is now Over

Fauzia Wahab

ISLAMABAD:The set target of the second phase has been achieved. Those leaders, who commanded country wide respect and popularity have been ousted even before they could enter the electoral arena. Benazir Bhutto, Kulsoom Nawaz, Shahbaz Sharif and many of our leaders have been disqualified, while candidates belonging to the religious alliance and the King’s Party face no problems.

LAHORE: Nawaz Sharif, Daewoo and Motorway are names synonymous with corruption. But the Motorway loot has not ended with the dismissal of the Sharif Government. It is still a duck which is laying golden eggs, but now for the military regime of General Pervez Musharraf, whose lead figure in financial scams, Lt Gen Javeed Ashraf Qazi, has again been caught with his hands in the till. Remember he is the same guy who has started a Rs 25 billion Golf Course in Lahore "in the supreme national security interest."

Journalists Hit List: Pix Battles: Indian Kebabs: Anti-Choudhries

By LampPost

NEW YORK:: As General Musharraf ended his 7-day Yatra to US, juicy details of what his 70-odd man delegation did in the Big Apple started to emerge. But the most disconcerting outcome of the visit was for some dissident journalists in US, including Editor of South Asia Tribune Shaheen Sehbai and writer and Analyst Hussain Haqqani. Both were officially warned that they could be targeted by Musharraf's men while in US. Hard to imagine, but true.

Another week of simple disasters

Dear Readers:

It was another disastrous week, if statements of General Musharraf are compared to what actually transpired on the ground in the realm of foreign policy and US-Pakistan vs US-Indian relations. Musharraf claimed full US support but all messages sent by top US leaders were to the contrary. Islamabad faced a major embarrassment over the reported arrest of 7 Arabs in Karachi who were plotting to kill General Musharraf, when Pakistan denied the attempt and none other than US Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage confirmed it in a congressional hearing. The Indian-US collaboration seemed set on long term, anti-Pakistan footing with Amb Blackwill coming out in strong words against Pakistan while in New Delhi.
On a personal note the week was no better for Pakistani journalists, specially my family in Pakistan who is now a direct target of the army’s wrath. Senior police official admitted to my colleagues and friends the cases against me and my family were baseless but the Military Intelligence was handling them and even judges were being directed not to allow bails to innocent, poor relatives, one in jail for 20 days, without any rescue. After Musharraf’s direct attack against me and Hussain Haqqani another dimension came to light --- an official message by US authorities to us to remain alert against hit squads of Musharraf. Hit squads in US? Wow! Sometimes I wonder what are we doing that is causing such a major pain to these Generals that they are bent upon punishing innocent bystanders just to get even with critics. They must be insane, or we must have touched on some raw nerves, or stepped on sore toes. Any one to tell us what have we done which we had not done in political regimes of Benazir and Nawaz Sharif? Expose them!

Enjoy.

.President Pervez Musharraf has just finished his 3rd visit to the United States in which he met President George Bush for 30 minutes. But the long Wish List Pakistanis had brought with them remained either undiscussed or not much progress was made. Neither side spoke about the items on that list. Read here how the visit progressed from Day-1 to his Departure. Click Here or on the Banner above.

The poor, powerless consumers of power, electric power, have to pay ever-increasing rates no matter if the company they are paying is making huge profits or running into losses. This report gives all the documents to show how mismanagement is causing costs to rise which are quietly and without any qualms, passed on to the consumers, who have to pay, through their nose at times.

This is a story of how double standards are followed, when counting losses and writing them off, without accountability. Pakistan Ordnance Factory imports defective artillery shells, to help someone, worth millions. When caught the losses are simply written off. The importers and exporters enjoy their loot and no one asks them any question. It is not like this when civilians are involved.

Has anyone counted how many Pakistani officials and diplomats, civilian and in uniform, refused to return to Pakistan after completing their posting in US? A quick count popped up embarrassing numbers. SA Tribune decided to get a full count with all the names and how these people are doing now.

The present Government claims it has nothing to do with corporate and business corruption. Yet senior most officials have been directly involved in the corruption that was rampant in the past. SA Tribune brings the story of one such high official who gave the sugar lobby much more than it demanded, but at what price to the tax payers.

Car manufacturing in Pakistan is a certified fraud. Influential groups, with the right links and connections, have obtained car making licenses under the garb of manfacturing. In fact these companies provide a big cover for imports, which are otherwise banned. Now thesegreedy car makers have been joined by the military government to rip the people off their money. A huge scandal in the making.

Billions swallowed by tycoons

The country's business community has gobbled up billions upon billions in bad loans but the Musharraf Government is content with only persecuting the politicians because they represent a threat to the regime. SA Tribune has got the lists of all defaulting companies of just one financial institution and the total adds up to over Rs 16 Billion (US$ 275 million). Read the lists.
