LONDON THEATRE GROUP TO LAUNCH "SAFAR", A NEW PLAY

LONDON, 26 September, 2002 - Desi Canvas, the UK-based literary and dramatics group, today announced a new play in Hindustani, Safar, a unique study of the life of South Asian immigrants. To be staged in West London from October 3-6.

Safar is Desi Canvas's second major production since the organisation was launched two years ago.

Written and directed by Desi Canvas's Creative Director Pervaiz Alam, Safar is a production that will be especially pertinent to the UK's Indian and Pakistani audiences.

"The play is a journey through the lives of its characters, each of whom is subject to the experience of being separated from home, family and country," said Alam. "Each of the three, in one way or the other, still bears the scars of the distressing Partition of India in 1947.

Safar examines the simmer of emotion that is still evident in the peoples of both India and Pakistan."

Four shows of Safar will be staged at the renowned Watermans Arts Centre in Brentford in West London, an established venue for Asian arts, drama and culture.

Desi Canvas's first production, Rishta, was a one-act play that won critical acclaim across the country with productions in England and Scotland. Adapted into Urdu by Achala Sharma from 'The Proposal', a 19th century play by Russian playwright Anton Chekhov, Rishta was a realistic common-man view of Indo-Pak relations in the wake of nuclear explosion by the two countries.

"Desi Canvas has an established reputation for dealing with grassroots issues that are unique to South Asia," said Amita Shankar, the group's Programme Co-ordinator. "Safar is an intense drama that will only strengthen this reputation and captivate audiences. This will also be a major boost to Hindi theatre in the UK"
