Memon orders end to harassment of journalist

By Khalid Hasan

NEW YORK: Nisar Memon, Pakistan’s minister for information and media development, said here on Wednesday that he had instructed Information Secretary Anwar Mahmood to see to it that the harassment of senior Islamabad journalist Amir Mateen comes to an end immediately.

He told the secretary to get in touch with Amir Mateen forthwith and to reassure him of his concern about reports that the jounalist was being harassed by intelligence agencies.

The minister also told Anwar Mahmood to ask Mateen to report any future incident to the former so that those responsible for such harrassment could be identified and dealt with. He also instructed that if so desired by the journalist, security should be provided to him. “We are not that kind of government,” said Memon. “We don’t permit such things.”
