Beware Overseas Pakistanis: The bad guys are coming after you

By Rauf Klasra

ISLAMABAD: Pakistans notoriously famous intelligence and investigation agencies are itching to start some dirty job against Pakistanis who can pay them bribes and "Keep Off" money in dollars and pounds, and even Yen. If a proposal of one of the main agencies, the FIA, is accepted, spooks would soon be sniffing your backyards and knocking on front doors in Washington, London, Tokyo, Hong Kong and Dubai, asking awkward questions and sending back nasty reports, if, of course, you don't cooperate. Meaning, you know what!

Special SAT Report

ISLAMABAD: Consumers have to pay for utilities through their nose, whatever the official justification for increasing the rates. Wily officials know it and it is their sweet will what explanation they offer for the newest increase. Sometimes it is the dictat of the IMF/World Bank. Fuel prrices rise and we pay more electricity rates. But SAT has found at least one case when there was justification, except that government wanted to pay the debt of a costly plant it had set up. A Generalin WAPDA did try to argue but in vain. People had to cough out Rs 2.5 billion more and they are doing it still. See the Documents showing what happened.

BB, Shahbaz condemn police action

Dear Readers: Last week has been an agonising time for me and my family as the Mush- arraf Government's police conducted raids in Rawalpindi to harass my relatives after the fake police case registered against me. But there was also a great sense of reassurance and fraternity as all sections of the civil society in Pakistan and abroad, came out to condemn the police action. PPP leader Benazir Bhutto and PML President Shahbaz Sharif specially issued statements in London and Jeddah. Human Rights organisations took note of the event and Press organisations expressed solidarity.

There was some silver lining in this ominously dark cloud as well. As word spread all around, specially Internet about the police action, everybody wanted to look at the South Asia Tribune and see what had we done to invoke the wrath of a government which normally was tolerating a lot of criticism from the media. It dawned on us that we had touched a very raw nerve by publishing the list of army generals and officers who had taken State lands at dirt cheap rates in the heart of Punjab. More such lists are coming but next week we are going to give a list of industries which gobbled away Rs 16 billion in bad loans from one organisation alone. The problem is every one has been trying to loot and plunder the poor country in whatever big or small manner it was possible. Yet all these stories have to be told and they will be told.

Thanks for your support.
